City partners with Spay & Neuter Kansas City to encourage residents to tag, license and microchip pets
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Animal Health and Public Safety Division has partnered with local non-profit organization Spay & Neuter Kansas City to promote Project Tag License Chip (Project T.L.C.) to the community. Project T.L.C. is a new initiative to increase the reunification of lost pets in Greater Kansas City. Its goal is to tag, license and microchip 10,000 pets in 2013.
The City’s Animal Shelter receives more than 5,000 lost or abandoned animals each year. Many of these animals are owned pets, but do not have a City license, rabies tag or microchip to help identify their owner.
Project T.L.C. has released a public service announcement online at www.snkc.net that introduces the initiative and demonstrates how easy it is for a pet – including indoor pets – to become lost. To further promote pet licensing, Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s vaccination clinic offers pet owners the T.L.C Package, which includes a rabies shot and tag, a City of Kansas City, Mo., pet license and a microchip for $30. Spay & Neuter Kansas City’s vaccination clinic is located at 1116 E. 59th St. Its days and hours of operation vary, so please visit www.snkc.net/calendar for a complete clinic schedule.
In addition to Spay & Neuter Kansas City, pet owners may license their pet at the City’s Animal Shelter at 4400 Raytown Road or electronically at www.petdata.com. They may also contact their veterinarian, who may be able to sell pet licenses, tags and microchips directly.
The City’s Animal Shelter provides one-year pet licenses (including tags) for $10 and three-year pet licenses (including tags) for $27. Both altered and unaltered pets are included in this pricing.
The City also offers a “Free Ride Home Program” for licensed pets. The City’s Animal Control staff will give a pet one free ride home per year if it is wearing a City pet license. No ticket will be issued for licensed pets that run at large. In addition, no shelter fees will be assessed if the owner is home when the pet is returned; half fees will be assessed if the owner cannot be located, and the pet is reclaimed at the shelter.
All funds generated from City pet license sales support improved care and treatment of animals at the City’s Animal Shelter.
For more information or media inquiries regarding Project T.L.C., please contact Patrick Egberuare, Animal Health and Public Safety Division manager, at 816-513-9803.
