WHA Block Watch

An effective WHA-supported Block Watch means more than posting a Watch sign. It depends on:

  1. Holding an organizing and planning meeting to identify:
    1. Number, status (vacant?) and occupants of houses on block
    2. Who are already members of WHA?
    3. Who are most likely to join the Block Watch?
    4. Who will contact the KCPD Community Outreach Officer for the Metro Patrol Division about speaking dates? Alternatively, get in touch with the WHA board to setup the speaking engagement.
    5. When, where to hold educational/formation meeting and how to promote attendance?
  2. At the educational/formation meeting, have ready:
    1. Sign-in sheet (determine how many households represented)
    2. Handout materials from KCPD Community Outreach Officer
    3. Map of WHA area
    4. Contact Information sheets
    5. (Optional, but a good idea) Engraving tool
    6. Inventory sheets
    7. Crime Prevention materials/video/pertinent websites
  3. At the educational/formation meeting the occupants of the houses, a majority, agree to participate in the program and choose a Block Watch Captain who will:
    1. Inform the WHA committee of the watch formation and contact information
    2. Ensure every block member knows contact information
    3. Determine block member's preferred way to be notified of crime events (phone/email/txt)
  4. Exchange of Contact Information
  5. Set date for the block's annual meeting

For help or to clarify the meaning of the program essentials, you are welcome to contact one of the WHA board members.
