WHA Block Watch
An effective WHA-supported Block Watch means more than posting a Watch sign. It depends on:
- Holding an organizing and planning meeting to identify:
- Number, status (vacant?) and occupants of houses on block
- Who are already members of WHA?
- Who are most likely to join the Block Watch?
- Who will contact the KCPD Community Outreach Officer for the Metro Patrol Division about speaking dates? Alternatively, get in touch with the WHA board to setup the speaking engagement.
- When, where to hold educational/formation meeting and how to promote attendance?
- At the educational/formation meeting, have ready:
- Sign-in sheet (determine how many households represented)
- Handout materials from KCPD Community Outreach Officer
- Map of WHA area
- Contact Information sheets
- (Optional, but a good idea) Engraving tool
- Inventory sheets
- Crime Prevention materials/video/pertinent websites
- At the educational/formation meeting the occupants of the houses, a majority, agree to participate in the program and choose a Block Watch Captain who will:
- Inform the WHA committee of the watch formation and contact information
- Ensure every block member knows contact information
- Determine block member's preferred way to be notified of crime events (phone/email/txt)
- Exchange of Contact Information
- Set date for the block's annual meeting
For help or to clarify the meaning of the program essentials, you are welcome to contact one of the WHA board members.
